  • What do you love about Computer Science? Computer Science is something I feel I can pour endless hours into and enjoy myself. The resourcefulness, problem solving, and creativity required in generating something out of code is really engaging for me. There's always something new I could be learning, creating, or contributing to. There's a massive community dedicated to learning more about the subject, and endless amounts of inspiration I could dig into to see what other problems people have solved.
  • What is one cool talent or hobby you have? Rock-climbing and yoga are the ones I've stuck with the most, with rock-climbing being number one and yoga number two. I also love animals and have a cat named Cleo.
  • What are you most looking forward to in Dev Degree? It will be really cool to have a community around me that I can learn from and with. So far with Computer Science I've been self-taught, and being able to have a community around me to grow with is very exciting.

  • What do you love about Computer Science? I find that Computer Science is a great way for me to utilize my mathematics skills as well as be creative. When it comes to programming, there are endless possibilities!
  • What is one cool talent or hobby you have? A cool talent/hobby of mine is singing. I have been singing since I was a little kid and I enjoy doing it very much! I have sung as a soloist, in duets, trios, quartets, and part of a choir for several years. I have performed for many school events, performances, and local charity events.
  • What are you most looking forward to in Dev Degree? I am most looking forward to meeting new people through the Dev Degree program. I am thrilled to begin working in a team with other Dev Degree members as well as fellow Shopify employees. I am also excited to learn more about Computer Science!

  • What do you love about Computer Science? I la-la-la-looooove Computer Science because it's an incredibly powerful way to help people. Before I chose tech, I was an English teacher for newcomers and refugees. I'll always remember the way my students felt stronger and empowered when I helped them create an email address, connected them to social media, and taught them basic typing skills. Technology empowers people, and that’s why I love it oh-so-much.
  • What is one cool talent or hobby you have? Oooh, this is a hard question. If I had to choose just one hobby, it would be YOGA. I'm a closet Yoga Teacher! I'm 100% certified from the Vancouver School of Yoga in 2016, and I teach free classes here and there. I don’t like to teach it as much as I love doing it! YOGA… IS … THE … BEST!!! If you feel shy and have always wanted to get into yoga, talk to me... it literally changed my life.
  • What are you most looking forward to in Dev Degree? ALL. THE. THINGS. Hehe, it’s true though. I simply can’t imagine a more perfect scenario: a real life mentor, a real life problem, the opportunity to SOLVE IT, and the chance to see the effects of that change in REAL LIFE! I get goosebumps just thinking about it. At school, as much as I love getting a lot of hypothetical Computer Science problems, I’m left wanting more! I can’t wait to learn ALL THE THINGS alongside all my cool fellow Shopifolk.

  • What do you love about Computer Science? I love the challenges that Computer Science can bring because I see them as a puzzle to solve - and puzzles are fun! There is never one way to solve a problem. Computer Science requires you to try different methods, use your creativity, and innovate your own solutions. Every day brings a change and nothing ever remains the same. This means I will never get bored and always be actively trying to solve a problem!
  • What is one cool talent or hobby you have? Two hobbies I have are politics and writing. I think it is important for youth to be politically active because it makes you more aware of the surrounding world, what policies will affect your life, and how you can voice your opinions to change the status quo. For writing, I like to write a journal entry or reflection every day to think back on the day and take note of the things that made me happy and things that could be improved. One talent I have is volleyball! I think my height gives me a substantial advantage but I also just love playing the sport and have been playing on my school team for two years.
  • What are you most looking forward to in Dev Degree? I am eagerly looking forward to meeting my fellow interns and hopefully making lots of new friends and connections. I am also looking forward to working in my intern position at Shopify because it will be my first exposure to working in an e-commerce company - in the real world!

  • What do you love about Computer Science? The chance to solve complex problems and feel a sense of ownership over my solution. I find the process of problem-solving to be very rewarding, especially when the problem is one whose solution is difficult to reach. I think it's even more rewarding to work with people who approach the same problem differently than I do. Collaborating to make the best possible solution results in a really awesome feeling, one that I can't wait to keep chasing!
  • What is one cool talent or hobby you have? I love playing chess! I'm the captain of my school's chess team and a frequent competitor in local open tournaments. Though the game doesn't seem very exciting on the surface, I think chess (especially at the professional level!) can be really thrilling, and an outlet for a lot of creativity.
  • What are you most looking forward to in Dev Degree? All of the opportunities for personal growth! Through both the personal and technical mentorship, as well as the team placements themselves, I'm looking forward to pursuing the chance to become a better developer and more well-rounded person.

  • What is one cool talent or hobby you have? I have a passion for playing guitar and making music in general. I get really inspired by watching others play in various videos, and I make a habit of practicing every day.
  • What are you most looking forward to in Dev Degree? I look forward to working with others on something important, and having an impact not just inside of a team or the company, but on the industry as a whole. I'm very excited to grow as a developer and as a person.

With the ever changing landscape of technology, the mystery and allure of the unknown appeals to my curiosity and innate desire of being a lifelong learner. Ultimately, it is through a computer science degree that I hope to not only become a user of technology, but also a champion of innovation.
  • What is one cool talent or hobby you have? When I think of food, it isn't just the meals I consume every day, but rather a medium for conversations, bonding, and memories. As an avid foodie, you'll find me thinking about the next restaurant I want to try, whether it's a small family institution or a Michelin star masterpiece. Eating, enjoying, and documenting my experiences so that I can share it with others is truly something I am passionate about. If you ever need a food recommendation or want to grab a meal, feel free to message me @jalenafood!
  • What are you most looking forward to in Dev Degree? I’m really looking forward to working with diverse students and professionals alike and learning from the best of the best. I’m also looking forward to applying what I learn in school in creating real projects. With the support and innovative culture of Shopify, I look forward to exploring my interests, developing strong coding practices and gaining invaluable work experiences while receiving a top-tier education. As I aim to change the world, I am certain the resources that Dev Degree has to offer will be crucial to my success. Ultimately, I believe that Dev Degree will empower me to not just become a leader of tomorrow, but also a leader of today.

  • What do you love about Computer Science? I love the fact that Computer Science can be applied to pretty much anything in order to make it more efficient, more interesting, more accessible, and just better in general. Then, while you're at it, you learn more about the world, the pieces start to click, and you begin understanding how things work!
  • What is one cool talent or hobby you have? I like origami. Tiny origami. Recently, I've been trying to make the smallest cranes possible, and so far, I can fit at least five flat on a nickel, but I'm still working on it! Butterflies are next.
  • What are you most looking forward to in Dev Degree? Don't tell my teachers, but I really don't like textbooks. This doesn't mean I don't like learning, though! If anything, I'm really excited to be partially out of the classroom, learning through every success and mistake at Shopify. And then, I'll be able to apply it all. Seeing my work, combined with the work of others, all come together into a functioning project makes me giddy with excitement!

  • What do you love about Computer Science? I love that computer science allows us to build technology that can be tailored to fit everyone's needs. Not only can you code websites and algorithms, but computer science has allowed us to create products and build companies. And we can do this faster than ever before, all while minimizing the intensive manual labour that withholds the human potential. With the resources that we free up through automation, we can focus on strengthening relationships with each other, continuously learning, and improving our quality of life, so we can all live our best lives.
  • What is one cool talent or hobby you have? I enjoy practising the art of minimalism, which is the art of living with less! At the end of the day, all we have is ourselves. By minimizing the physical clutter around me, I'm able to free up my mental hard drive to be more mindful of everything I do and everything around me. I'm also able to embrace who I am without feeling the need to define myself with external items like brands or products. Also, it reduces cleaning time! This gives me more time to practice meditation and live in the present moment.
  • What are you most looking forward to in Dev Degree? I'm looking forward to meeting everyone in the Dev Degree cohort and the rest of the Shopifolk! I love the values that Shopify has cultivated so I know I'm going to meet some really special people and I can't wait to learn from and with everyone. Also, I'm super excited to learn Shopify's tech stack so I can dive into building some real-world solutions.

  • What do you love about Computer Science? Computer Science is at this ravishing and rare intersection of logic and creativity. It is the ideal example of building something from nothing while tackling issues that have never been solved before. Its potential is limited to only your imagination.
  • What is one cool talent or hobby you have? Going 40 km/h on ice has always been more than a hobby to me. I have been short track speed skating since I was 5 years old. I joined Team Ontario in 2017 and competed in the Canada East Short Track Championships, and the 2018 Ontario Winter Games.
  • What are you most looking forward to in Dev Degree? I am excited to start the Dev Degree program because I want to meet like-minded individuals who have the same passion and determination I do. • What do you love about Computer Science? That it meets at the intersection of creativity and logic. You can build something in software or hardware from nothing but your imagination, that can be effective for society and contributes to culture or even creates a platform for culture to be shared! Being able to create in that way is really cool to me.
  • What is one cool talent or hobby you have? I currently practice yoga, it's still new for me in my life but I've learned a lot through practice about the mind-body connection.

  • What do you love about Computer Science? Technology is fast becoming a type of identity – be it in the form of a personal or professional website, or a companion with smart speakers like Alexa or Google Home. Technology is also revolutionizing the way humans view the world and what we think we are capable of – with artificial intelligence making life easier and giving us more time to explore, data science helping us understand behavioural patterns to thrive in businesses or grow in science research, machine learning making machines more intelligent and receptive to our needs – and every day, I feel like I live in a world where I can do so much. This world of technology is only going to grow – get more complex and more accommodating, and expand the horizons of what we can do by ten folds. And Computer Science enables me to be a part of it – not as a bystander but as someone who actively uses it to help the people around me and contribute to the growth of the generation.
  • What is one cool talent or hobby you have? I love learning languages! I grew up as a polyglot, learning English in school and two Indian languages at home. Since then, I’ve tried my hand at Spanish (which didn’t go too well, admittedly), German, and I am currently learning Korean. I’ve found a fun way to do it – I learn it while watching Korean dramas. Over time, I’ve picked up on a lot of the language, and I feel like it has been much more effective than classroom learning, because of the immersive learning from watching people actually speaking their native language. It isn't just about knowing the language, but also its culture and people. In the future, I hope to learn several more languages in a similar fashion – tons of entertainment while broadening my horizons!
  • What are you most looking forward to in Dev Degree? I’m definitely looking forward to being a part of an extremely driven and talented community of people in Shopify. Everyone from Shopify I’ve spoken to have told me they love what they’re doing, and that the work environment there really promotes a growth mindset. Talking to them has been really inspiring and uplifting, and I can’t wait till I get to experience that myself too! I really want to learn and grow a lot as a student and a person from my time in Dev Degree, and also contribute meaningfully to the company. The really cool workplace is definitely an added bonus, though!

  • What do you love about Computer Science? What really sparked my interest to pursue a career in Computer Science was the final results of my hard work. It was the moments when I found errors in my code, corrected those errors and saw the outcome appear on my screen that fuelled my passion for Computer Science. This was the class where I was able to create anything I wanted from scratch and it sparked my problem-solving skills and creativity as there were endless possibilities of what I could achieve.
  • What is one cool talent or hobby you have? In my spare time, I often try to keep myself occupied by getting active, writing stories and occasional photography. One of my hobbies and talents include playing the guitar. Playing the guitar was vastly different than the clarinet and the piano, which are other instruments that I play. I was self-taught at first by using all the resources I could find online and when I began taking classes I advanced further. By now, I have played multiple pop songs, including Bellyache by Billie Eilish and am continuing to learn more complex songs!
  • What are you most looking forward to in Dev Degree? I am most looking forward to the people I will get to work with at Shopify, whether it’s in any of the cohorts, my development teams, or other members of the company. I enjoy being around the company of people often and having already worked with a mentor at Shopify, I know that I will be in good hands. In Dev Degree, I am excited to gain insight into what it is like to work in an office and the work experiences/skills that I will gain by being on development teams. Most of all, I am looking forward to making memories for the four years that I will be spending with my Dev Degree family!

  • What do you love about Computer Science? I love how Computer Science paves the way for endless possibilities! With it, there's the potential to craft virtually anything. I can express both my logical and creative self in solving problems, and as I continue to learn, there are practically limitless new problems to tackle. It's amazing to think about how much computer science has achieved already, and how much more is still waiting to be explored!
  • What is one cool talent or hobby you have? I love to play the piano! I first started when I was 6 years old, because I was inspired by my grandmother's beautiful playing. Now, I still have that childlike excitement toward how much I can improve and how many pieces I can explore, even within just one composer's works (Chopin was a genius)! Playing piano is a uniquely cathartic experience for me, and I'm extremely grateful to my grandmother for encouraging me over my many years of practice and for the many years to come.
  • What are you most looking forward to in Dev Degree? I'm excited to be a part of Dev Degree's amazing environment, particularly with the opportunity to learn and grow with so much support. I get to pursue my passion in computer science, all while building relationships with the brilliant people around me and truly focusing on personal growth over the course of university.

  • What do you love about Computer Science? I have always had a passion for using technology to solve problems. If you look at almost any industry over the last 20 years they have been fundamentally changed by the advent of new technology and computers. This is what I love about Computer Science, it enables you to be a part of the technological disruption of business.
  • What is one cool talent or hobby you have? I have been a competitive swimmer for almost 10 years now. While swimming isn’t a “cool” talent per se, through the years of hypoxic training I have learned to hold my breath pretty well. I am able to swim relatively far underwater, having at my best swum 100 meters underwater without breathing. Too bad this isn’t a marketable skill!
  • What are you most looking forward to in Dev Degree? I am most looking forward to the community of people I will get to meet and be a part of at Shopify. I have always loved working as part of a team and having visited the office, the atmosphere feels like an amazing learning environment where people get s$%t done! Additionally, Ottawa seems very nice and I’m looking forward to the opportunity to cycle around.

  • What is one cool talent or hobby you have? In grade 9, I participated in my first ever hackathon (NASA SpaceApps 2019) and ever since then, I’ve been fascinated by the idea of networking, brainstorming and prototyping an entire business in just under 24 hours. Since then, I’ve been competing regularly across the province and have been to about a dozen or so different competitions. I also organized a high school hackathon in Ottawa with a few friends.
